UPMC - Fri, 10/24/2014 - 9:23pm
If you're traveling through Oakland tonight, you might see this giant digital sign along Fifth Avenue. In honor of #WorldPolioDay, Pittsburgh area Rotarians worked with UPMC to light up the old Children's Hospital tower to raise awareness of this crippling childhood disease. Since 1988, the number of polio cases worldwide has been reduced 99% from 350,000 a year to about 400 in 2013. But this year, the World Health Organization declared polio to be a public health emergency of international concern, reinforcing the effort to eradicate remaining cases.

Oakland is a fitting place for this message, since Dr. Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh, ultimately ending polio in the U.S. On Tuesday, Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Dr. Salk's birth with a day-long symposium focusing on another one of his passions—sustainability and public health. "Like" this post to show your support for World Polio Day! #endpolio
